Starting in March 12, 2011 we did a LINK program, which was a three week internship at a place of interest. I had always been interested in law
inforcement, so I decided to do my internship at the Durango Police Department. On this page you will see daily blogs of different events that I was able to do, my project proposal and an interview with Captain Baker who was my mentor during this time. |
Daily Logs:3/12/12
Today was a good first day at the Durango Police Department. I got a tour of the department and met many new faces that I am going to have to try harder in remembering their names. Today I had the opportunity of going to drug court with my mentor, seeing a little bit of how the investigation work is done and got to see some things in the administrations devision. 3/13/12 Bryan Bauer came over for a little bit today from his internship. We had a tour of the building with one of the detectives and he tought us how to lift fingerprints and the propper way to collect DNA. From there we gathered our collected DNA and went to fill out the description tag as if it were a piece of evidence. Later in the afternoon I went to what had been a crime scene before. I saw where a gun had been shot and where it hit the concrete and where it went from there. Before my day was over I went to the Substation to get a tour and saw some of the equipment that is used there. 3/14/12 Today was my first day on patrol. I spent the morning watching cars being towed that weren't supposed to be where they were parked. I watched several owners of their cars come running out when they found out that they were going to be getting towed and that was kind of entertaining. I rode around town with an officer in the morning and road with a different one in the afternoon. Some of the calls that we went on, I believe that I am not at liberty to discuss about what the situations were about and how they went, so I am not going to. 3/15/12 Today I started off my morning by heading over to the Court House. I watched and saw how the jury works to have a complete jury for the day. After the jury was chosen I went to the District Attorney's (DA) office. There I got an overview of what the DA did what Mr. Tod's role was. I then talked to him and Christian more about trials, juries, etc. After I was done at the DA's office I headed back to the Court House. For the rest of my day there I watched the trial and observed more how it works 3/16/12 Today I headed over to the jail out in Bodo Park. I mett the Sergent of the jail and others that worked there. I got a tour of the whole jail. I saw which cells were for what type of people for what crimes they had committed, or ones that still had not yet been convicted. Along with that, I found out that there are five different uniforms that are worn along with a wrist band, so the people working there can easily tell which inmates had done what and where they belong. I went to Control and saw how all of the doors and cameras work. There is a computer that controls almost everything in the building. The man on duty in Control can control all of the doors by deciding which ones can be opened and when they can be closed. I could go more into detail with everything and describe more things, but to be safe I am not going to share that information. When I left the jail I headed back to the PD. I mett a few more officers that were on duty and spent the rest of my time there on patrol. 3/19/12 Today I started off the morning by heading across the street to the Munipical Court. I sat in on the judges cases that she had with the citizens of Durango. I was supposed to sit on in a trial too, but the defendent did not show. I sat in with the women that work in the Munipical Court to see what they did, how they did it and who does what. After lunch I ran back over to the police department and went on patroll for about an hour. After patrolling I went to Property. I got a tour of everything in there and I would have to say that, that is the place where I learned the most today. 3/20/12 Today I headed over to Bodo Park to Central Dispatch. I mett everyone that was working there. Each of the ladies that I was with had their own Console. In it they each had five computers. Each computer played a different role and I feel now that I should have taken notes on what each one did. I will have to try my best from memory. With their computers they are able to choose which station they talk on. Whether that be the fire department, the state patroll, the sheriff, or the marchalls. They are able to see where each officers squad car is on a map if they desire. They choose which officer they want to talk to, or talk back to which officer talks to them. They answer 911 calls and do so much more that I can't even remember at the moment. I also got a tour of the building and saw everything that helps run the computers and where everything is backed up. There was much more with the radio and computer system that I saw that is used, but I don't remember what all it was called. 3/21/12 Today I was pretty fun day. I started off by meeting Sergent Deck, all of the Durango Police and Sheriff Office's SWAT team. I hung out with Sergent Deck and learned what their training was going to be like and where. I found out that I was going to be involved in their training as a role player. When the time was right I headed with one of the snipers to where the training exercises were going to be held. When I got there and everything was figured out I was told what my job was. I was supposed to play the role as a drug subject and hang out in the barn, unitel I hear the SWAT team knock then I was to count to twenty-five and go open the door. When I heard a truck pulling in I looked out a crack of the barn and saw the armored car with the SWAT team hanging on the side ready to go. I could hear them everywhere and within seconds I could tell there were a lot more than I originally thought. Next thing I heard was the SWAT team banging on the door and yelling. When it was time I went to open the door. The next thing I knew I was grabbed, thrown and pinned to the ground with team members running into the door behind me. I was then hand cuffed and serched. After they cleared the building I was able to get back onto my feet and had the hand cuffs taken off. Later on there was another scenerio. This time two volenters from the fire department were with me. Their role play was that they were drug atticks and had just shot a cop in farmington and were fleeing and hiding in their grandparents abandoned home. My role in this one was that I was inside graffitizing their walls with paint and no one knew I was inside. The two victims barracaded the house covering most of the windows with sheets and leaning boards against the windows and doors. It turned into the scenero being two brothers that shot a cop and fled to this house and barracaded themselves in it with a weapon. In seconds the house was surrounded by snipers, entry teams, negotiators and more. Through the time of the two men being inside the negotiators got a hold of the older brothers cell phone number and started making calls. After time the brothers cell phone was getting close to dying. This changed into the SWAT team throwing in a box phone. Soon the brothers found me in the house. The scenerio changed from two men barracading themselves in a house to a hostage situation, which changed the plan for the SWAT team. The brothers would use me as a shield and put me into the window, so the negotiators knew that they had a hostage. They used me as leverage to get water and an attempt to get a vehicle to drive away in. The older brother took me upstairs and ended up being shot by a sniper and had to pretend to be dead. Right after the sniper fired we heard yelling and flash/bang grenades going on. You could hear the younger brother down stairs starting to scream and you knew the house was full of the SWAT team. Within seconds I heard them running up the stairs into the room the older brother and I were in and I was yelled at to get on the ground. Once again I was pinned with a knee in my back and hand cuffed. I was then surched and released. |

Once again I was pinned with a knee in my back and hand cuffed. I was then surched and released. 3/22/12 Today I was told that if I went to prison I would be very poperler:/ I spent my day by heading over to ICE, Immigration Customs Enforcement. Here I met special agents that worked for different federal agencies that I didn't even know existed and some that I didn't even know were in our local Durango. I got a tour of ICE's building and an overview of what ICE is and what they do. I didn't even know that this building existed. They have interrigation rooms, holding rooms, offices for agents and more. I mett an agent from ERO, Enforcement Removal Operations. They mainly deal with arrest reports, track down people living illegally, deal with identity theft and social security. I mett a special agent from BLM, Bureo Land Management. This agency mainly deals with managing public and land recources. I mett with a special agent from CBI, Colorado Bureo Investigations. They are sort of like a state FBI agency. They are for extra help to work with agencies that need them. They also deal with violent fellonies and homicides. I mett with two US Marshalls. They are the oldest federal law enforcement in the United States. They are a fugitive task force, court transportatioin, protection for the court, deal with the witness protection program. The Marshalls are similar to the Sheriffs Office, but instead of being county they are nation wide. I mett with a local agent from the IRS, Internal Revenue Service and a girl from the Durango FBI, Federal Bureae of Investigations. Over the phone I was able to talk to a FDA, Food Drug Administrations, agent. After talking with all of these special agents I learned that there is a lot more opportunity than what I knew before. Now I am more interrested in persuing an ICE career more than a police department. 3/23/12 This time I started my internship day by starting patroll at 6:00 PM and ended sometime around 2:45 AM. Throughout the evening and night we went on many disturbance calls. The officer took me to specific locations where he likes to patroll to help keep things from happening. Through the whole time I was with the officer we made two arrests and took both of them to the jail. I learned a lot this night by observing officers and how they deal with people using their actions. There is a lot to pay attention to and think about to be prepared to help keep yourself and others safe. With everything that happened this night, I would say that it was one of the most fun things I did at the time of my internship so far. 3/26/12 Today I spent my day in property again. I learned the other side of what happends there and how much has to be done. With all of the evidence that they get there is a job that has to be done for each one. I learned how they keep it booked and how important it is that it is all kept in order. Property is a big role in a police department and how it is run and handled can either get someone fired or put in jail at the police department. I have already been with property, so it was kind of a re-run. I find it very interesting with how they have to deal with all of the evidence and how some of it has to be destroyed. 3/27/12 Today I spent part of my morning with the secretary and sat in her's and Captain Baker's meeting. I spent the rest of the day going to Court where I watched the court work dealing with people mainly with DUI's, speeding tickets, and other sourt of tickets. Later I met one of the SRO officers at Miller Middle school. He is an officer that stays at the school to help with everything around. 3/28/12 Today I started off by going to the Humane Society. I went on a ride along with the animal control and tried to go find wild animals. Never found any. Only little dogs without a leash. I had a tour of the Humane Society and saw Marlena. From there I headed to Court and watched what was going on there for a little bit. Before Captain Baker left for the day I was in his office with the two motorcycle officers. They offered me to patrol with them and spoon, I said yes, but I guess I was more serious than they were since I never got to ride with them on their bikes. I went to meet another SRO officer at Riverview Elementry where we left from there and went patrolling around Durango High School during lunch. Unfortunatly didn't catch anyone doing anything stupid, so we left and headed to Miller Middle School. We met with the officer there again and hung around till their lunch was over. After I was dropped off at my truck I finished the day by hanging out at the Court House watching more happen with the citezens of Durango. |

This is one of the rooms I was a hostage in. You can't really see it but in the bottom right is the younger brother talking on the phone with the negotiators along with the older brother in the doorway with the M4.
This was after I was searched and the SWAT team was searching the attic to have a clear.

Description
For my LINK internship this year I will be doing mine with the Durango Police Department. Through this internship I will be able to experience different fields and specific parts of the police department. This will allow me to see parts of law enforcement that I like more and I might persue in a career. If I do persue a career in law enforcement, it will be able to let me have more of an idea of which parts I like and will help me determine which aspects of the job I want to stay away from and which I enjoy most.

Project Proposal:
This year I will be interring with the Durango Police
Department. Through my internship I will be taking advantage of as many
opportunities as possible, to see different fields and aspects in the world of
law enforcement.
Some of the aspects that I will be encountering in my
internship will be ride alongs. I will be riding in a squad car and experiencing
what happens there. If my ride along ends up turning into a high speed chase,
the officer that I am with will have to have me get out of the car. This is for
safety and liability reasons. If I am feeling up to it and there is something
happening at the autopsy in the three weeks that I am there, I will be able to
go and see what that is like. I highly doubt that the autopsy is something that
I would be interested in for anything in my life, but I see it as I need to get
a feel for as much as I can. I do have the ability to leave if I change my mind
when I am closer to experiencing it and don't feel up to it. Another aspect that
I will be able to experience is attending SWAT and officer training. I cannot
say for sure whether or not I will be able to shoot, or even do all of the
training. Who knows, they might end up using me to play the role as the victim
in their training exercises.
Not all aspects to an officer’s job are fun
and exciting. I will be seeing what it is like to be at the station.
. There will be other aspects that I will probably be experiencing as
well that I will find out what they are when time gets closer.
My mentor
for my internship is Captain Donald L. Baker. He is the Captain of the Durango
Police Department. Captain Baker has a big part of my internship. He will be
planning and deciding what I do each day and will plan my schedule for the three
weeks that I am there. I will be
able to help Captain Baker by giving him my personal views of the Department.
Whether that is something that could be changed or improved, or something that
is a very positive aspect that needs to definitely stay. With me being an
“outsider” of the Department, I will be able to hopefully notice things that the
people in the Department can’t and explain to them my views on how I see it.
I still am not entirely sure of what I want to do as a career in my life. I
have many different interests. One interest that I have always had is an
interest in criminal justice and law enforcement. I thought that having the
ability to do my internship with the police department would be very beneficial
to me personally. Through the three weeks I will be able to see many different
aspects of law enforcement and develop a feel of what I like doing more and
what parts of it I do not enjoy and would prefer not to do.
The project
that I am going to do through my internship is going to be a written essay on
what it is like to be in a police officer's world with limited experience. It
will be about my views and how they are, or are not similar to someone in the
police force. With the police officers having years of experience through
different scenarios and training, the actions that they take, I may or may not
agree with how things are handled. If this happens, it will give me the
opportunity to ask and learn of why they did what they did, or even what they
didn't do that I thought they should
have.
On my digital portfolio
I have a spot labeled "Daily Logs." This will be where I talk about experiences
of what happened that day and any thoughts or feelings that I wish to talk
about. At different times in my internship I will have access to a computer and
will have time to work on my own personal work. At these times is when I will be
posting my daily logs. I will also be using that time to work on my project.
This is when I will be starting to brain storm my experiences that I have had
and how I want to turn that into my written essay. Through time I will be
developing it into my essay.
I Once my internship starts or if I know my
schedule before then I will be able to start develop my time line of dates for
what day I will do what for my project. Who even knows what they could be. My
personal job if something goes wrong and I was the cause of it, it will be being
honest with Captain Baker. It will be my responsibility to advocate for myself
if something goes wrong. Even if it was an honest, simple, embarrassing mistake,
I will need to be honest and let Captain Baker or someone that I can talk to
sooner of what happened
